Garbage Art in New York City
Now you don’t have to wait till Halloween to dress up your yard waste in orange jack-o’-lantern plastic bags. Artists in Manhattan are decorating the streets of NYC by gift wrapping garbage in polka dotted trash bags.
TRASH is a viewer generated public art installation through the use of ARP (art related product). The premise of the project is to beautify New York City and raise the public awareness of the arts and the environment. Read more HERE and then view the vids HERE and HERE
If you prefer to actually see NYC trash, then check out I Sell Garbage or the current Affirmation Arts exhibit with the pretentious title: Garbage Picker! The Contemporary Artist as Chiffonniere(e). Read reviews of this show HERE and HERE
And if you want to get beyond glorifying garbage and actually delve into conceptual art about NYC waste disposal, Mierle Laderman Ukeles is the artist who has been doing it since the 1970’s and remains active today; more info HERE and HERE
