This spring’s Arts Walk in Oly was particularly fun: the weather was nice and lots of people managed to make their way upstairs to visit Cast Off Art Studio. We went through a lot of red wine and red vines, Jenny sold a few bags, so did Bil, and I even sold one of my candy wrapper dolls (thanks, Deane!). But being open to the public for Arts Walk is more about community than commerce: through our participation in Arts Walk, we entertain, educate, and engage friends and strangers in the ongoing conversation of “What is Art.”

Art is not always obvious; the Art of Community can take many forms. I especially appreciated David Scherer’s antics, first as the Flat Win comb salesman, and then as the dj of a spontaneous dance party at the intersection of Washington and 5th after the Procession of the Species parade. There was so much going on, I wish I could have been everywhere at once! I missed the performance-art bride (but you can see pictures of her here and here and read what she wore at Dumpster Values). The husband and I did enjoy the Running of the Hippies, happily waving to neighbors, friends, and co-workers who were doing their tie-dyed thing in the parade. Its great that at our Olympia Arts Walk there are a variety of venues for folks to express themselves, whatever that form may take. Me personally, I am committed to the human form.
