Father’s Day
David Scherer is the organizer of the annual Downtown Neighborhood Association street fair, turning the streets right in front of Cast Off Art Studio into one big garage sale/block party right here in Olympia, WA (along with Capital City Pride over in Sylvester Park) today.
David is also a remarkable re-artist and an inspired dad: he and his son Random have created these beautiful junk art collages of varying sizes and shapes, which are on display throughout the Martin Apartments (even Sam and Joe were impressed).
THE STORY
When I started taking care of The Martin Building I was surprised by the volume of stuff that had accumulated over the years. A lot of it was useless, but pretty so I didn“™t throw it away. Instead I started storing it in boxes down in the basement. Then one rainy afternoon my son and I got a glue gun and a board and we started making the thing that hangs over the front door. Over the years we“™ve made a lot of these “things“ and we“™ve got them on display in the halls. Some people call this art. I think of it as creative building management.
The boxes have migrated from the basement and there“™s a shelf system of containers in the north hall where anyone can donate their stuff. When cleaning out your junk drawer, toolkit, desk or trunk, chances are you“™ll find odd things that would make a nice addition to one of our projects. If you have any questions, please drop by number fourteen.

THANKS FOR SENDING US THESE PICTURES….WHAT A GREAT CREATIVE THING TO DO…..WE REALLY ADMIRE YOUR TALENT…..KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK… GERI AND SAM FRIEDMAN (RACHAEL AND FREYA’S
GRANDPARENTS…..
David has made some amazing pieces and installations that are hidden in the past and some buried in the infrastructure.
These works are simply the tips of an amazing mandalic iceberg. If you are lucky you will stumble upon one of his works in your time or spatial travels.
(hint try listening to a musician from Jupiter while searching)
Not only David is an amazing dad, but he’s my role model for fathering. And Random is an amazing son, I hope my kids will use him as their role model.
Their art is great! It always inspires me to think out of the box.
If every building manager did what David does, the built world would be a fabulous art installation.
hey i helped make some of those art peices too, and i know how much work goes into each one!
Hi Random and David
